A New Academic Year

The pace starts to quicken as this the first week back at uni.
This week mainly taken up with induction and registration, so they will not get going until next week.
This is the third and final final year and I hope to graduate with a B.A (Hons) Fine Art, so at the moment the focus is on the dissertation and working in the studio in preparation for the Degree show of 2009.
On a slightly different note I am hoping to get to London this Frday to see
Art of London at the Royal Chelsea Hospital. The site is well worth looking at as it has good links with the exhibitors.

The Breakfast Table by John Singer Sargent

The Breakfast Table by John Singer Sargent is in complete contrast to the earlier painting by Van Gogh of The Potato Eaters shown a few posts ago.Sargent’s painting was painted in 1884 and Van Gogh’s in 1885.
One reeks of poverty and serfdom whilst the other is more sadate and there is a peacefullness about it.

Yosemite!

This photo was taken about a couple of years ago and whatever words you use you cannot really describe the breathtaking scenery

A Artist who painted Yosemite, Albert Bierstadt is often described as only painting ‘stage paintings for scenery’ well i disagree they

have to be large and dramatic if they are to have any impact

Flowers In A Blue Vase by Van Gogh

Todays painting in the continuing Van Gough Series is Flowers in a Blue Vase.

This was painted in June 1887 and at the time Van Gogh was becoming more interested in Natural things and in particular Flowers

“He is a painter , he will remain a painter; whether he, still young, translates Holland into the dark, whether he, alittle bit older. paints Montmartre and its gardens as a Divisionist or whether he paints ( the south or Auvers-sur-Oise) with a furious application of colour . Whether he loses himself in colour spots or deformation. he will remain a painter for ever and ever”

Emile Barnard

Rocky Shore, 14x16inches

Rocky Shore, 14x16inches

and there is lots of texture going on, the measurement of the painting is 14×18 inches there is more I can see in the painting that I could work on, but then perhaps that is when i have to stop!

The Potato Eaters by Van Gogh

A rather austere painting by Van Gogh a complete opposite to the colourful ones we are so used to.
He was shocked by the meager food the peasants were forced to eat and this painting was in part a social commentary, not to be taken to lightly by anyone.

“Amongst this confusion I was dismayed by a meal poor people had in a weird hut under a dim Lamp .It was ugly in a splendid way and loaded in alarming activity”
Emile Bernard

Nature Notes

Here is a interesting photo that i managed to take this morning, for the past two or three mornings I have noticed a few butterflies fluttering around this particular spot on the pavement, They were obviously attracted  by the fruit which had fallen onto to the pavement. I suspect it is the juice that attracts them.

Landmark

To celebrate the autumn equinox a new background colour.

Also looking at my Blog Stats,I know very exciting, but I have passed a milestone in terms of numbers, the 3000 page views mark, which is not bad since I only starte with Woodpress in August this year, they assure us that they do not count our own views so it is 3000 odd hits from people out there
