Mont Sainte-Victoire

the artist was attracted by this mountain and it seemed to inspire him a great deal.

“The Mountain comes into sight bfore Le Tholonet. It is bare and almost monochrome, more a glare of light than colour. Some times it is possible to confuse lines of cloud with sky high mountains, here it is the other way around
At first site. the shimmering mountain is like an apparation in the sky , and this effect is heightend by the vertical fall of the rocky mountainsides, which seem to have been forced in motion only a moment ago, and by the horizontal, parallel folds of the strata at the base of the mountain. The mountain gives the impression of having flowed downwards from the almost uniformely coloured sky and coalesced into a small solid structure in space
Peter Handke, Die Lebre der Sainte-Victoire)
